We had an appointment at the Ear Nose and Throat doctor today. We were referred by our family doctor. I had high hopes for todays visit, Mia has been plagued with chronic ear infections for the last six months and I was hoping that the doctor would give us a solution.
We waited in a little exam room and sat in what looked like a barber chair in the middle. I sat with Mia in my lap, I put A Bug's Life on my phone for her to watch. It's a technique I often employ. It gets her to sit still and pay little mind to a doctors poking and proding. The doctor came in and asked a series of questions regarding Mia's medical history. It was about five minutes into my spiel when I realized that my daughter who I once considered to be in excellent health probably hasnt felt good since the day she was born. She's always had a low reverberating rattle when she breathes.
The doctor looked in her ears and saw that her ear infection was on the mend. He then asked if he could take a look in her mouth. I have never been able to get her to open her mouth for doctors in the past. No matter how many times I try to get her to mimic me as I stick out my tongue and say "AHHHH". Finally today, I put one hand on her forehead and the other on her chin and pryed her mouth open. She cried but the doctor was able to get a good look. He discovered that she has large tonsils.
It took us about a minute of discussion to reach the conclusion that she should have tubes put in her ears and have her tonsils taken out at the same time. I don't know how much of her current behavior can be attributed to her feeling crummy but I'm hoping this surgery will prompt some changes in how she feels and as a result how she behaves. The surgery should take about half an hour and is scheduled for February 9. The sooner the better I say, I just hope she doesn't get another infection in the two weeks we have to wait.
